An Analytics Solution for Complex Times

The post-pandemic workplace has a great deal of factors to weigh in its decision-making. This is especially true for federal, state, and local government agencies. With every policy or governance choice, agencies must now consider viral spread, social distancing, economic health, and several other public safety requirements in their planning.

Reopening initiatives, for example, have had to weigh data on testing rates, positivity rates, and death rates in order to determine whether certain spaces were fit to open their doors again. These same statistics, when paired with unemployment and disability statistics, have also been used to determine government response and support allocation.

With all these factors and more to consider, data is becoming ever more pertinent to the decision-making process. Several government agencies have already made steps toward assessing their data more accurately and efficiently in order to combat COVID-19, and often in novel ways – such as analyzing emergency call data.

Data observation has been creative and manifold in the wake of the pandemic, and its prevalence will only continue to grow with our constantly increasing global complexity. Agencies will be tasked with working with new data and situations as they arise, and adapting quickly and intelligently to each shift.

This means every agency must be prepared to analyze data in a flash, even those which previously didn’t work with constantly changing data. For inspiration on how to most effectively do this, we can observe an agency which has worked with uncertainty and crises since its inception – the US Agency of International Development.

The approach USAID has taken in previous years has been largely software-driven. After adopting the dashboarding software Tableau, the USAID has seen a monumental increase in efficiency. They credit Tableau’s fast, user-friendly analytics for their ability to “drive discussions about where [they] want to go…and the impacts [they] hope to have.” Others have also credited Tableau with being intuitive and quickly mastered, saying it provides a quick solution for many data analytics puzzles.

No two agencies are the same. Every agency has different needs when it comes to data intake and analytics. SIRC is here to help. If you would benefit from a discussion about Tableau or other potential solutions to these new and pressing issues, please contact us.
